Welcome to AP English 11 and English 12 Flip

Welcome to English class! I look forward to getting to know each of you individually as you make your way through our class and learn reading, writing, and persuasive thought. My instructional periods are one and seven; these are excellent times if you find yourself needing help. On this page are links and documents to help prepare homework and projects for class. Together, we will master the skills needed for the future. I can always be reached at joann_miller@bismarckschools.org.

What is an AP class?

AP is an acronym for Advanced Placement classes for the college bound and the upper level student. AP English 11 is English Language and Composition, which provides a strong background in rhetorical analysis, a broad reading background, and strong composition skills. Taking the college exam in the spring can help students earn college credit and/or placement into advanced coursework. Not only will taking AP classes in high school save the students time and money, it will also improve their chances at acceptance to competitive schools. The AP exam is given in the spring and students will receive their scores in July.

What is the AP Language Exam?

This exam is generated by the College Board, which oversees all Advanced Placement classes and gives approval to the syllabus of each AP instructor. The AP Language Exam is composed of two parts: the 50 multiple choice questions based on reading passages given in the exam and three writing prompts. One writing prompt is rhetorical analysis, one is synthesis of sources into a persuasive response, and the third is an argumentation/persuasion response. When preparing for this exam, students should log on to the AP Central Website, >http://www.collegeboard.com/ap/students/englishwhere they will find past essay questions as well as some student responses and scoring guides.

English 12 Flip

At last! The class all seniors have been waiting for: their last high school English class! English 12 Flip goes in reverse order from a regular English 12 class, which means it begins with a writing unit culminating in the senior research paper. Next, the students will read a Victorian novel. In this class, seniors will be able to choose from one of three novels to finish the semester.
Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, and Macbeth along with a persuasive essay and a college entrance essay, will comprise the curriculum of the last semester.
